Garage Door Spring & Cable Replacement

Springs do nearly all the work of lifting a garage door; the opener only guides it. They are also the one part most likely to injure someone. Torsion springs hold enormous stored energy, and replacing them needs the right winding bars and the right technique — this is not a DIY job.

What's involved

How we handle it

  • Identifying the spring system: torsion above the opening, or extension along the tracks
  • Springs sized to the door's real weight, wire size, inside diameter and length
  • Replacing springs in pairs so the load stays even and both age together
  • Lift cable replacement and correct drum spooling
  • Winding the spring to the correct turns and balancing the door by hand
  • Checking the shaft, bearing plates and centre bearing while access is open
  • Safety check of the whole system before we leave

When to call

Signs you need this

If any of these sound like your door, it is worth a call before it turns into a bigger job.

You heard a bang from the garage

A torsion spring failing sounds like a firecracker. Often nothing else seems wrong until you try to open the door.

There's a visible gap in the spring coil

A two- to three-inch gap in the coil above the door is a broken torsion spring. Do not try to open the door.

The door is suddenly far too heavy

Without a working spring the full weight of the door is on you or the opener. Both are a problem.

The opener strains, or only lifts a few inches

Openers are not built to lift an unbalanced door. Running one that way will destroy the opener next.

Around the clock

Door stuck, spring broken, or car shut in?

Garage doors do not fail at convenient times. Call and we will get yours safe and secure.
